Head Public Sector Solutions Asia Pacific and Multi-lateral Development Banks, Swiss Re
Lubomir Varbanov is Managing Director and Head Public Sector Solutions for Asia Pacific and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) at Swiss Re, where he leads the only group in the insurance industry fully dedicated to partnering with governments, state-owned enterprises, multilateral organisations, sovereign wealth funds, development banks, export credit agencies and other public sector entities. Based in Singapore, he joined Swiss Re in May 2022, and oversees a diverse team of seasoned professionals in Australia, China, India, Japan, Singapore and Switzerland. Since August 2024, he also holds responsibility globally for Swiss Re's work with Multilateral Development Banks (including the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the World Bank Group – IBRD, IDA, IFC and MIGA).
Prior to joining Swiss Re, Lubomir built over 25 years of industry and investment experience in emerging and developed markets, leading and advising on over US$10 billion of investments worldwide. Between 2002 and 2022, he held a progression of roles at the International Finance Corporation (IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group) in Washington D.C. and Singapore, most recently as Head of New Business, APAC and Global Head of Equity in the Infrastructure and Natural Resources team). Before IFC, Lubomir was Head of Corporate Finance at energy multinational BG Group (now part of Shell) in London.
Lubomir has served as Non-Executive Director on the boards of companies in Europe, Africa and Asia, most recently at Hero Future Energies, a leading Indian renewable energy platform.
Lubomir holds a BA in Business Studies and Languages from Regent's College, London and an MSc in Finance from London Business School. He is married, with three children, and speaks Bulgarian, French, German and Russian.
